Tree, River, Field

Tree, River, Field large

This view of the Avon River looks east from Robert’s family home in Mount Denson. Robert’s sister Janet is seen under an apple tree, the last of an orchard planted 50 years earlier. The small figure in white adds a sense of the scale to this magnificent old tree. The picture of a tree, half dead and half alive, reflects Robert’s feelings after being diagnosed with cancer. It also gives a perfect feeling of the rhythm of the seasons. The river is coloured brown; at low tide, the water barely covers the mud beneath the surface. The wave-like bands of low cut green and yellow grass in the foreground contrast with the tall straight stalks of uncut hay in the middle ground. The painting appeared on the cover of a Lancelot Press catalogue for 1993.
