Her hand touches the man, pressing him toward her; at the same time, she gazes beyond him, concerned perhaps that they will be detected and the secret of their relationship exposed. As with the painting, Flame, the identity of the male lover is not revealed. What he is in real life and what he is in the woman’s imagination are two very different things. A cascading stream of water fills the background like a psychedelic curtain, giving the sense that this experience is an intense, short-lived high, sustained by taking ever-greater risks.
