The First Day

The First Day large

A patient is given flowers to brighten a room and to cheer spirits during the slow period of recovery. The setting for this image is the back deck of Robert’s parents’ home in Mount Denson, Nova Scotia. Robert’s mother Isabel was famous for growing geraniums. The flowers in this image function as a healing agent, reminding the viewer of how precious life is, but also how fragile and short-lived. Robert makes the deck look like a stage projecting into the air, with a glorious swirl of forest shapes serving as backdrop. The artist has eliminated the spacious lawn from the actual location to increase the dramatic effect. The watercolour medium gives this work a luminous and fresh effect.
