These sketches reveal how the “Seal Upon Thine Heart” series, in its early stages, takes shape in Robert’s mind. In the top sketch, Robert uses himself as model for the male lover. He puts himself in the foreground as the one lighting the match, with a naked woman in the background. In the bottom sketch, the woman is in the foreground holding the lighted match. The man, now nude, is relegated to the background with his head cropped out of the picture. The source book, By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept, is written by a woman and conveys her point of view. These sketches also reflect the fact that Robert has found a model for the woman, but has yet to find a satisfactory model for the man. As Robert shifts his figures around, he also experiments with lighting effects. In a Magritte-like paradox, the light from the match does not penetrate the dark silhouette of the woman’s form.
