The study shows a naturalistic scene of a car parked in a small lot off an alleyway between buildings hidden by a dense foliage of trees. All the shading lines, made with large sweeping arcs, follow the same direction. Unlike the finished painting, there are no human figures and the drawing was made in broad daylight (probably from a nearby apartment window looking down on the car). By changing the scene to night-time, eliminating the trees, making the streetlight the primary source of light, and adding two figures, Robert has changed the finished painting to make it more symbolic and more reflective of the title.
