The building is impersonal; the arrow supplies an added push. Patients attempt to relax in the lounge, but their view outside to a wall of cell-like windows is hardly comforting. These early sketchbook drawings are direct observation of strangers, which is why Robert makes notes in the margin as a reminder of colour and clothing details.
