Waiting Area

Waiting Area large

Waiting is a big part of the patient’s experience. While Robert waits, he observes and draws. Robert’s charcoal drawing, while almost identical to the pen and ink sketch of the same subject, focuses more on the patients and on capturing a sense of light and shade. The L-shape of the more relaxed sitting figure matches the frame of the window. This figure seems to be there for moral support and looks at the other more tensed-up figure, whose back is turned to his friend as he stares out the window. Robert has eliminated the window view seen in the first sketch, leaving most of the image blank and empty. The anxious patient is lost in thought—what he sees, like what he thinks, is not accessible to others.
