An idea is pursued and transformed. The left hand page shows studies for the painting, Harbour. A couple, standing on the edge of a pier, are seen from above. The water is drawn as a dark mass with irregular cloud-like shapes modulating its surface. In the margins, Robert plays with these shapes. The right hand page shows studies for the painting, The Sea. The woman with the pony-tail in Harbour is pictured by herself. She is no longer seen from above, but from behind. The water before her is no longer a dark mass, though the cloud patterns persist. The shapes are compared to the shapes of a jig-saw puzzle. The shapes are separated and made anamorphic. Robert equates water with a question. The woman has come to the sea, as if to an ancient oracle, to ask questions about her future. Following pages in the sketchbook show the woman with a baby carriage. The sea is now drawn in a more realistic manner.
