Poster for Agriculture in Transition

Notes on the subject of food appear in a small sketchbook Robert took with him on a trip to Toronto in the fall of 1985. His trips often coincided with health lectures or workshops. A month later Robert created this poster. The topic clearly intrigued him as he filled six sketchbook pages with ideas and drawings, creating as many studies as he would for a major painting. The poster invites the viewer to follow an old-fashioned tractor through a gauntlet of lunar-sized crops and animals that soar like spaceships or revolving planets in the darkened void. The earth-bound antiquated machine is juxtaposed with flying space-age food, with the human figure positioned halfway between the two worlds. Sketchbook notes refer to “vegetable as rocket” and encourage the contrast of “old and modern farming.” For the poster Robert has depicted common local foods such as corn, apple, diary, potato and broccoli. It is interesting to note that these foods are today at the forefront of the genetically modified food revolution, a revolution in many ways at odds with Robert’s Macrobiotic principles.
