Good Luck

Good Luck large

In his series on lovers, A Seal Upon Thine Heart, Robert often showed couples facing one another in profile, with one face partly in shadow and the other illuminated almost in reverse. As in Baroque art, the shadows and glints of light suggested a complex inner life full of mixed emotions. In Good Luck, the face of the man is completely in shadow and his apprehensive look signals that he is the patient about to undergo a treatment or a test. The woman’s face is brightly lit to reflect her optimism and cheerful good will toward her friend. Like an angel offering a benediction, she crosses her fingers to communicate a message of good luck.
