A man and woman face each other in profile. One face is brightly lit and the other is in shadow. Between the heads is placed a symbolic object. In the top drawing this symbolic object is an exploding bomb. (The original Elizabeth Smart love story takes place during World War II.) This drawing is accompanied by a caption “explosive look,” an example of Robert’s literal depiction of common expressions. The idea leads Robert to a second drawing, where the explosion is depicted as an ecstatic burst of flowers. This festive mood is tempered by the presence of a skull in the background.
