Clothesline and Fences

Clothesline and Fences large

In Robert’s photo series on fences, he shows structures that hint at human activity without actually showing any people. Often wildness meets tameness, along with contrasts of horizontal and vertical elements. Here, picket fences and a clothesline, one dark and the other light, run close to the ground, while trees, fire escape and balconies reach upward. The apartment wall contributes to an enclosed feeling; however the fences look like they are struggling to contain the unruly vegetation tumbling out around them. The scene might be called dreary, but it is also full of pattern and variety. In a scene that looks like not much changes, the clothesline provides a hopeful sign of recent intervention.
