A man and woman appear together in a room but they are divided by modern devices: telephone, TV and stereo. Robert’s girlfriend Heather talks on the phone, while a screen lights up in the background. The pensive man, a self-portrait of Robert, looks off into another space. This could be a picture of a young couple living together for the first time or it could be an image of a man thinking of calling his girlfriend. The media devices serve both as symbols of connection and disconnection. Robert has eliminated some of the detail from his initial study, removing a movie poster of Buster Keaton from the wall and an image of a car on the TV screen that seemed to travel from one figure to the other. Robert has also added a shelf of books behind the man, who now bears a stronger resemblance to himself. The room is split in two: the telephone and the TV fall within the woman’s orbit: the books within the man’s. The stereo speaker, suggesting a mutual love of music, is something they share in common.
