This work was intended as a present for Robert’s aunt, Margaret Pope, who the family called “Meggie.” Meggie was Robert’s most ardent collector and supporter of his work. Meggie loved animals, particularly dogs and cats, who she sometimes featured in her own amateur paintings. Robert set himself the challenge of painting a landscape and including in it one or more of Meggie’s pets.
