In this charcoal study of an half-dead apple tree that is surprisingly resilient with new growth, Robert looks to the west of his family’s property in Mount Denson so that the factory in Hantsport is visible in the distance (on the lower left). Robert has exaggerated the contrast of bare branches with new growth, so that the tree looks lop-sided. In his finished version, he eliminates the factory, adds a figure to provide a sense of scale, and moves further away from the tree to include more of the surrounding landscape.
