This sketchbook page focuses on waiting patients interacting with their friends and families. Robert’s marginal notes describe details of clothing. In his first sketch of a patient and friend, it was ambiguous who was the patient and who was the friend. What Robert now observes is that patients often wear pyjamas and robes, while the supporting families dress in regular street clothes. The patients do not blend in; these night-clothes make them seem more vulnerable, more exposed and incarcerated. In the final thumbnail sketch, Robert explores what becomes a major theme of his series: intimate moments played out on a public stage.
