This collage painting, originally titled “Narcissism,” brings together three elements: a photo of swaggering rock stars (Mick Jagger and Keith Richards), a painting of a small old-fashioned television set and a mirror glued onto the surface of the painting. Robert’s faint reflection can be seen in this mirror. In a sketchbook, Robert reveals mixed feelings toward pop culture, noting how rock ‘n roll and television “have taken over the role religion used to play. It brings us together, gives us a set of values, entertains us. It gives us a cultural point with which to situate ourselves and common ground to relate to others. It gives us our gods and disciples.” Robert’s painting was influenced by the outrageous, die-cut cover for the Rolling Stones’ album, Some Girls, 1978. This cover showed the faces of band members in drag with blank faced paper dolls inviting further inserts. Imagine yourself having this look.
