An ambitious attempt to bring many figures and themes together. The drawing is in three parts on three pieces of paper, which allowed Robert a chance to experiment with how the elements fit together. The horse, which leads the eye from the kissing couple to the couple hidden behind an umbrella, is an early instance of his “talking animal” motif—where an animal is able to express feelings that are repressed within people. The merry-go-round was inspired by the final scene in the Alfred Hitchcock film, Strangers on a Train.
