This charcoal drawing is Robert’s copy of Pieter Breugel’s famous painting, The Parable of the Blind. Robert admired work from all periods of art history, and he felt a strong affinity for Breugel, with his scenes from rural life and his fantasy and humour. Like Breugel, Robert occasionally based his paintings on popular expressions. Robert turned to a similar metaphor of blindness during the “Illness and Healing” series to represent a patient’s feeling of being in the dark about cancer.
