Study for Exit

Study for Exit large

Robert includes a surprising number of contrasts within a small sketch, starting with the man’s bald head and the woman’s curly mop-top. The man is cropped on the left; the woman is cropped on the right. The man is inside the elevator; the woman is outside. The man is portrayed with hard dark shadows and is pictured against a dark wall; the woman has soft cross-hatched shadows and is pictured against a white wall. The man is staring intently, the woman appears to have her eyes closed. Exit tells the story of a break-up (the elevator is a metaphor for the ups and downs of a relationship), but it is also a picture of sexual anxiety and disconnection. Robert is beginning to integrate influences from different sources: Edvard Munch, comic strips, film noir.
