Study for Dream: Diggers large

A patient dreams he is part of a beautiful landscape overlooking the water. Disrupting the serenity of this view are three workmen who dig a large hole in the earth. The landscape resembles Robert’s parent’s property in Mt. Denson, which ran along the river and offered a distant view of Cape Blomidon. In the finished watercolour, Robert changed this scenery, eliminating the trees and replacing Blomidon with a distant sailboat. The three long horizontal shapes look like shadows on the grass. In the finished work, these shadows have a strange curve to them, as does the horizon line, making the whole landscape appear distorted, as if seen through a fish-eye lens or the lens of a dream.
