A masked woman, possibly a nurse or doctor, injects a drug into a drowsing patient’s arm. There are no witnesses other than a blank television screen. The semi-conscious cancer patient looks like the martyred hero from the 19th century painting, David’s Death of Marat–even the head scarf is the same. The facial expression suggests the apathy of a person beyond hope. A nurse replaces Marat’s female assassin. The nurse protects herself–and hides her identity–with a mask and gloves. The large black box that hovers over the patient’s bed is more clearly delineated as a TV in the finished drawing. The TV promises escapist distractions, but the escape is not real and quickly inspires boredom and fatigue. Ironically, the drama played out here is not on the TV, but happens before our eyes in an unknown patient’s room.
