This study for Accident fills in details of the composition. The central mangled car resembles a giant bug flipped helplessly over on its back. Groups form that suggest difficult social classes, ages and professions, starting with a young couple and a lone balding heavy-set man in the foreground. Workmen in overalls, teenagers in short jackets, and middle class professional types are placed on one side and police and emergency responders line up on the other. In the middle of the picture, standing directly over the car wreck are a family: mother, father and two children. These may be the owners of the car. In the finished painting, the family are moved off centre and to the back to become the farthest of all figures from the car. This keeps the main attention focussed on the car. Also in the finished work, there is variety within the crowd, but they remain just that, a crowd, with no dominating characters.
