Of the hundreds of photos Robert took while attending art school, he only took three photographs inside the school itself. These are two of them. The other is of a dance event. The poverty and dilapidation of the city that was so evident in Robert’s street photographs, is also in evidence here in the school’s studios for students. Part of the mess is simply the mess of creation, but the rooms do look rather rough. The man on the left holding the camera is Sean McQuay, a fellow art student and close friend. What seems to be happening is that Sean takes Robert’s picture, while Robert takes Sean’s picture. A duel with cameras, the artists are having a little fun, possibly instead of doing their assignments.
The image on the right shows two students at work, though both have their backs to the viewer. Artwork is taped to the wall between them. These artists may be more diligent than Robert and Sean, but it’s harder for the viewer to relate to them.
