This painting was a commercial assignment for Robert, an opportunity to hone his skills in a period between exhibitions. Like other “portraits” of homes Robert created at this time, Simms House is visually striking and has historic significance. It’s a Vernacular-style structure dating from the 1880s that blends Gothic and Greek Revival elements. Gothic features include the large gabled window with two smaller gables on either side of it. Greek features include the symmetry of the front façade, with a row of Doric columns supporting the roof of the veranda.
Located in Wolfville, Simms House was once a private home, but is now part of Acadia University. It presently houses the Wong International Centre, a place where international students study and gather for events.
