Drawn in 1986, the year Robert received radiation treatments in Toronto, Robert looks small and frail. His clothes appear oversized and baggy, as if he’s recently lost weight. There is, however, a playful quality to the drawing’s cross-hatching that throws one half of the body and face in shadow. Robert has used white paint to erase the line that defined the cheek. The figure wears a sports jacket, suggesting he is on his way somewhere. He stands with one hand in his jacket pocket. This may be an attempt to look informal or to hide an insecurity. How different the mood is here from some of Robert’s earlier self-portraits, where he appears brash and youthful with his wild long hair.
