Robert has taken a file photo of a doctor or researcher peering through an electron microscope and added to the size of the instrument to make it a fantastic tower of technological wizardry, instrument of mad science. It reminds me of the Tower of Babel, a Biblical fable of human pride and miscommunication. Robert’s drawings tend to be freer, more spontaneous and sometimes, as in this case, contain an element of absurdity, irony or humor that gets played down in his finished paintings.
