Combining Robert’s interest in cars and mirrors, Rear View was a key work of his “Oppositions” exhibition at NSCAD. The opposition in this image involves the city seen at night in the rear-view mirror and the street in the day visible in front of the car, as well as the implied forward and backward views and motions. The image reminds me of Marshall McLuhan’s famous quote: “We look at the present through a rear view mirror. We march backwards into the future.”
