This image, showing a father and son eating food from a plate, sitting on a rock surrounded by water as far as the eye can see, was created during the “Illness & Healing” project, but has no obvious connection to the cancer series. While combining three of Robert’s interests: food, family and the ocean, the mood of the image is ambiguous. Is it meant to be an idyllic interlude, a childhood memory of better times? Is it a spontaneous urge to share a moment with a loved one because the future is uncertain? Or is there a hint here that the picnic started at low tide and high tide has come unexpectedly to strand the figures? Robert himself experienced highs and lows where one day he was in the hospital feeling miserable and the next day he was on the beach with his friends and everything was back to normal.
