A patient in street clothes, braced by two nurses, practices walking down a crowded hospital corridor. The excited witnesses include a fellow patient in a wheelchair, at an earlier stage in her own treatment. Robert created many versions of New Steps, starting with this horizontal view conceived as a drama of recovery. In a recent article in the Journal of Allied Health (winter 2015), Dr. David Barnard uses this image as a metaphor for how medicine involves a “community of healers in which each individual health professional has a contribution to make as a member of a team.” Barnard contrasts this view with the more traditional view of a single doctor attending a patient, demonstrating individual competence. He goes on to call these two views, individual and team competencies, as the yin and yang of professional identity.
