Robert portrays his parents, Bill and Isabel, in a car, speeding through an undefined space like astronauts hurtling into the unknown. The couple sit close together. They share a common purpose. That purpose is their journey, which is not a trip to the grocery store or to the cinema, but rather a life journey. The journey will take them to death and possibly beyond. This sense of the couple’s indivisibility and the boundless space they cross are both heroic aspects of an otherwise ordinary couple. An earlier image in the “Accident” series had depicted two cars passing in opposite directions. In one car were a young couple and in the other car, an elderly couple. The cars are used in an allegorical manner to depict two different stages of life. In Journey, the allegory is tempered with the artist’s humorous and affectionate tribute to his parents.
