A rare instance where Robert has drawn an animal with no human presence. The rounded wave-like lines which follow the contour of the animal’s body, are broken by the sharp lines issuing from the wolf’s mouth. The radiating lines enclose the wolf like a mandorla or full body halo, as if this animal has a spiritual force or represents a vital source of energy. The color choice of red and yellow breaking out of a field of grey suggests a sunrise or sunset, a time when the wolf might howl. Though Robert based his wolf image on an album cover, Los Lobos’ How Will the Wolf Survive, he has made significant changes to make the animal even more stylized. Robert uses a woodcut-like treatment and adds the lines signifying the animal’s howl.
