Fog

Fog large

The clarity and legibility of the letters spelling “fog” diminish and seem to disappear in the surrounding mist. This a good example of what British designer Alan Fletcher calls a “Tom Swiftie,” using typography “to demonstrate what it states.” (The Art of Looking Sideways, 2001). Fog is a weather condition often encountered in Nova Scotia. Fog also refers to a confusion characterized by lack of clarity, such as emerging from a medicated fog or suffering the fogs of dementia. Surrealists and conceptual artists often combine words and images to subvert conventions, starting with the more absurd conventions of language. In Robert’s humorous drawing, the language used to describe fog seems to run away and hide from itself.
