The tables have been turned as a group of doctors are examined from the patient’s point of view. Are they scientists or judges in their white wrinkled gowns emerging chillingly out of the darkness? The group appear in an intimidating pack formation. Each doctor or intern is stationed at a different distance from the patient, suggesting a hierarchy of importance or experience. The lead doctor has an eye defect, but looks concerned and unafraid of contact with the patient; the second in command is large and physically imposing; the woman intern exists on an island in a largely male profession–she is the only figure whose body does not overlap and touch the others; the intern with folded hands is biding his time, while the most distant intern, an intellectual with glasses, is meek and largely ignored. The image conjures up alternating emotions of curiosity and fear, of authority and collective judgment.
