Daughter and Father

Daughter and Father large

An elderly man in a wheelchair stares off into space while his daughter stands guard. She looks stiff and unrecognizable, with most of her body in shadow and her features treated like a mask hiding any trace of emotion. The man in the wheelchair looks much more at peace with himself and with the unstated situation of aging and looming separation. A fragment of bed links father and daughter, but they are clearly headed in different directions. The room itself seems to dissolve, as a background of geometric cross-hatching turn into dots of light in a cosmic field. The white dots on black ground suggest a starry sky or a threshold pointing beyond human existence. The same starry effect is repeated in the shadow that spreads over the daughter’s body, as if she too is dissolving, as the room dissolved, at a turning point in her life.
