Robert and his artist friends were great letter writers. When they weren’t writing letters, they were leaving notes for one another in their studios, on apartment doors and other meeting spots. Because they were artists, their letters were full of drawings and cartoons. Robert was such a perfectionist that he made studies for the cartoons he put in his letters. Here is one of them, a study for a cartoon of himself, wearing a Pope’s oversized pointed mitre, addressing his friend Jean Coutts, wearing a queen’s crown. Jean had a keen sense of humour and made fun of anyone who took himself too seriously, including Robert. For Robert’s “Seal Upon Thine Heart” series, Jean posed for the wife in the love triangle pictures, Interior and Falling in Love.
