From the personal to the global, micro to macro, an artist is involved in both perception and engagement. The eye is positioned outside the world like an astronaut in space. The eyeball mimics the shape of the globe, while the shadow on the face resembles the contour of continents inside the globe. The long panoramic composition, anchored by a foreground head in profile, is a strategy used in Robert’s painting, Shifting Weather. The dashed line, linking an eye to the object viewed, is a device found in cartoons. The shaded globe is Robert’s nod to designer Saul Bass and his logo for AT&T. Robert was a student of the history of graphic design, as well as art history, and he loved well-designed products and spaces.
