A view from Robert’s Morris Street apartment, looking over city rooftops toward the distant Victoria General Hospital. The image is reminiscent of Robert’s earlier Halifax Citadel over Rooftops, 1982, a bird’s-eye view of a city with a symbolic landmark in contrast to surrounding elements. The hospital blends in with the other buildings, half-hidden in the shadows from its two projecting wings, but ominously present. It is the place where Robert was born and within 3 years from the time of this drawing, it is the place where he dies. As part of the artist’s procedural approach to his Illness & Healing project, he establishes the geography of the hospital within the surrounding city. This drawing leads to further drawings of a patient approaching and then entering the hospital, where begins the process of being admitted and becoming a patient.
