Robert was living on Veith Street in the North End close to the shipyards when he first moved to Halifax. Thickly painted in black, white and gray, this cityscape dates from Robert’s art school days, at the same time he was painting High School Dance, Graveyard and other images influenced by Gerhardt Richter. The quick study looks crowded and confusing, but Robert has created a strong central axis that aligns car, tree, boat and crane. All the other shapes are parallel or perpendicular to this axis.
