This large black and white drawing was used to illustrate a magazine story, “The Gathering Storm,” as the United Church grappled with the issue of ordaining homosexual ministers. (The Second Mile, June 1988). Robert’s illustration of a small isolated church, surrounded by storm clouds, was both dramatic and non-judgmental. This is another example of a commercial work leading to a personal painting that featured prominently in Robert’s “Accident” exhibition. In the drawing, the simple country church looks tiny in a vast landscape. The church is lit as if by a spotlight, despite the fact the sky is dark with clouds. There are no figures or other signs of human presence. In the painting, the church is a more substantial and sophisticated building, with enhanced Gothic elements. The church fills the entire picture frame as the small figure of a man makes his way toward the high arched entrance. The church is stronger in the painting, more of a sanctuary, however the sense of an impending storm, presented by the drawing, is all but lost.
