Three Men

Three Men large

Robert’s chemo treatments induced nausea. On car rides home from the hospital, he would be sick for most of the hour-long trip. This process of treatment followed by sickness repeated for many months. Robert has recorded this ordeal in Three Men, which shows support given by family members. The driver of the car is his father, William, who struggles to maintain his focus on the road ahead. In the back seat, reaching forward encouragingly, is Robert’s younger brother, Doug. Showing a patient in a moving car is a way of saying that illness is a journey; in this case, a nightmarish one with no comforting views of countryside or home. The cramped interior of the car suggests there is no escaping the course of this journey.
