Robert was interested in popular story-telling and folklore, so ghosts and supernatural elements appear throughout his work, though he becomes more sophisticated in their treatment in his later work. The cemetery is located in Mount Denson with the Avon River visible in the background. The black and white treatment is reminiscent of High School Dance, 1979, and anticipates Orchard, 1987. The ghosts are created by leaving the page bare. Their paper-doll appearance forms a dance-like procession across the nocturnal scene.
The artwork was created for the cover of the Lancelot Press book, Haunted: Tales of the Unexplained by Edith Mosher. The lack of colour has a practical function: the press at this time did not have the capacity to print images in full colour.
