Robert is trying out the idea of himself as 19-year-old artist, entrepreneur and self-promoter. He mimics a Rembrandt-like pose with his folded arms, one hand holding a brush that points to the letters, which his person half-hides. Robert would be torn for many years between his vision of himself as a fine artist showing original works in galleries and as a designer and illustrator working in mass media. This drawing hints at both sides of his personality. Robert was fascinated with all areas of graphic design and, as a teenager, began making signs for a few clients around town, such as the Windsor Tennis Club and the Windsor Centennial Committee. In high school Robert acquired a book on lettering and typography. Essential to hand-drawn letters is the use of grids. This is one of the earliest samples of Robert’s long practice of using grids.
