Chemotherapy large

Along with the technology of microscopes, scanning devices, x-ray and radiation machines, Robert also documents how modern medicine is largely based on wonder drugs like those used in chemotherapy. In the above painting, Robert conveys a patient’s fearful anticipation of a pending injection. The background is tinged with a reddish cast—as if the room’s décor matched the colour of the drug. The patient wears a scarf over her head to hide the fact that she’s lost her hair—a side effect of the treatment. I’ve been told that many doctors changed their practice after seeing this painting, and are no longer so casual in the way the drug is displayed to the patient before administering it.
