While studying at art school, Robert rarely photographed people. When he did, the images tended to play down individual identities. These two photos contrast dancers at a party (probably at NSCAD) and dancers rehearsing in a studio. The left hand image crops the dancers so we cannot see their faces or feet, as if the viewer is part of the scene and can only partially see through the densely packed bodies. The dancers are captured with a flash, which freezes the motion, but renders the background black. The studio picture on the right uses a long exposure, which blurs the motion. The whole bodies of dancers are shown and the room is clearly delineated. The two images taken together might be described as play and work, or as social dancing and artistic creation. In one, the motion is subtle and at close quarters; in the other the motion is more vigorous, with a greater sense of choreography and ensemble.
