Two sketchbook drawings show the development of an idea. In the first drawing, the car is positioned half-way between two figures and a telephone booth. The car is lit from above by the streetlight and casts a triangle-shaped shadow. In the second drawing the car is seen from the sky, it juts at a diagonal, its body has been darkened so that the highlights are more dramatic, but the biggest change is with the giant ring of light that illuminates the scene. Figures emerge out of darkness. There is a sense of desolation to the scene, with the car being a possible way out of this desolation.
